Bookie, great job! Looks as if you took the assignment seriously, went to different locations and tried different angles. My favorite is the last one. Good use of the door and steps as a framing device.
My favorite of these would have to be the one where he is looking up at the flag. It seems very symbolic of his military background. My least favorite is probably the one where he is smelling the flowers, not because I don't like the picture, but because it's very comical in contrast with the rest of your photos.
The last image is the strongest as it displays some personality. The second image at the flag is the weakest as it appears more of a memorial photo than a portrait.
I really like the first picture. I read it as being trapped or caged in. Really great pictures. I would like to see more of up close and personal pictures.
